Who We Are?

Our History

The Gambia Chess Federation (GCF) has a history that dates back to its formal establishment and subsequent affiliation with FIDE, the international chess federation. In 1979, the Gambia Chess Federation joined FIDE, marking its official recognition on the global chess stage.
Malick Secka served as the first president of the Gambia Chess Federation, contributing to the initial growth and development of chess within the country. After his tenure, Antuman Njie assumed the presidency, taking on the responsibility of further advancing the presence and influence of chess in The Gambia.
Following Antuman Njie, Amadou Jallow took over the leadership of the Gambia Chess Federation. His term involved efforts to expand chess participation, organize tournaments, and enhance the overall chess infrastructure in the country.

In the subsequent years, Ebrima Nyass assumed the role of president, bringing his vision and leadership to the Gambia Chess Federation. Under his guidance, the federation likely continued its mission to promote chess at the grassroots level, foster a competitive chess environment, and represent The Gambia in international chess competitions.

Ebrima Nyass remains the current president of the Gambia Chess Federation. His presidency may have been marked by initiatives to engage more players, encourage youth participation, and strengthen the overall chess community in The Gambia.
The history of the Gambia Chess Federation reflects a commitment to the growth and promotion of chess within the country, with each president contributing to the development of the game at various levels. Affiliation with FIDE in 1979 solidified the Gambia Chess Federation’s connection to the global chess community, enabling its players to participate in international events and fostering a sense of camaraderie among chess enthusiasts in The Gambia.
